Category: Heat-clearing formulas / Heat-clearing toxin-resolving formulas
Method: The original formula was a powder made by roughly grinding the ingredients with a mortar and then decocting 15–30g at a time. It is now usually prepared as a decoction which is split into two.
Rationale: Huáng lián and Huáng qín clear and drain upper-burner heat toxin. Lián qiào, Niú bàng zǐ, Jiāng cán, and Bò hé course upper-burner wind-heat. Xuán shēn, Bǎn lán gēn enhance the action of the Huáng lián and Huáng qín. Mǎ bó, Jié gěng, and Gān cǎo act with the Niú bàng zǐ and Bò hé to clear and disinhibit the throat. Chén pí rectifies qì, regulates provisioning and defense and helps the other agents to course wind and disperse swelling. Shēng má and Chái hú course wind-heat and help the other agents to reach the head.
