Dosage: 3–9g 1–2 times a day.
Rationale: Qīng méng shí is heavy, dry, and harsh. It precipitates qì and phlegm. Huǒ xiāo is a warm bitter mobile agent that breaks hardness and disperses accumulations. These two agents are calcined together to enhance chlorite's ability to attack and expel stubborn phlegm. Chén xiāng precipitates qì, conducting phlegm-fire downward. Dà huáng combined with Huáng qín drains fire and frees the stool, conducting the phlegm-fire out through the stool. The formula thus contains cold bitter, warm bitter, and salty balanced agents, which counteract each other's natures without detracting from each other's action.
