Origin in unofficial sources: This is tiannanxing processed with bovine bile (in some place sheep or pig's bile being used).

Properties: Bitter; cool. Note that it is less dry and hot than tiannanxing.

Actions and indications: Clears and transforms heat phlegm; extinguishes wind and settles fright Treats Phlegm-heat fright wind with convulsions, clouded spirit, and fright reversal (acute fright wind in children).

Dosage and method: Oral: Decoct (2.4–4.5g); use in pills and powders. Topical: Apply as a powder.

Product description: This product takes the form of hard blocks or cylindrical sticks, black or dark brown on the outside, and slightly lighter on the cut edge. It is hard and tough, and gives off a slight aroma.

Quality: The best quality is moist, black, and slightly sharp and numbing to the taste, without any unpleasant fishy smell.

Etymology: The name dǎn xīng 胆星 means bile star; more at tiān nán xīng 天南星.
