Four Stems Decoction
四藤汤 〔四藤湯〕 sì téng tāng

Ingredients
- Luò shí téng (络石藤 Trachelospermi Caulis, star jasmine stem) 15g
- Jī xuè téng (鸡血藤 Spatholobi Caulis, spatholobus [stem]) 15g
- Hǎi fēng téng (海风藤 Piperis Kadsurae Caulis, kadsura pepper stem) 15g
- Shēn jīn cǎo (伸筋草 Lycopodii Herba, ground pine) 15g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 9g
- Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 9g
- Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]) 15g
- Dà xuè téng (大血藤 Sargentodoxae Caulis, sargentodoxa [stem]) 15g
Actions: Quickens the blood and transforms stasis; soothes the sinew and quickens the network vessels.
Indications: Cerebral thrombosis.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The four agents
supplement the blood and regulate menstruation. Táo rén and Hóng huā quicken the blood and dispel stasis. Luò shí téng, Hǎi fēng téng, Jī xuè téng, Dà xuè téng, and Shēn jīn cǎo all soothe the sinews and free the network vessels, quicken the blood and transform stasis.
Variations:
Qì vacuity : Add Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]), Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]), and Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]).Qì stagnation : Yù jīn (郁金 Curcumae Radix, curcuma [root]) and Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]).Yīn vacuity and yáng hyperactivity: Add Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]), Gōu téng (钩藤 Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, uncaria [stem and thorn]), Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell), and Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]).
