Properties: Acrid, slightly bitter, slightly sweet; balanced.
Channel entry: liver, spleen, and triple burner channels.
Indications:
- Courses the liver and rectifies qì: Qì stagnation causing rib-side pain or abdominal pain.
- Regulates menstruation and relieves pain: Depressed liver qì manifesting in menstrual irregularities, menstrual pain, and distending pain in the breast.
Dosage & Method:
Oral: 6–12g in decoctions. Vinegar-processing strengthens its pain-relieving action.
Warning:
Contraindicated in qì vacuity without stagnation, in yīn vacuity, and in blood heat.
Quality:
Large firm red rhizomes with a strong aroma are the best.
