Properties: Bitter; balanced.
Channel entry: large intestine and liver channels.
Indications:
- Clears heat and resolves toxin; quickens the blood and relieves pain: Intestinal welling-abscesses with abdominal pain; heat toxin sores.
- Quickens the blood and disperses stasis; disperses swelling and relieves pain:
Injury from knocks and falls ; amenorrhea; wind-damp impediment (fēng shī bì) pain.
Dosage & Method:
Oral: 15–30g in decoctions. It can also be powdered or steeped in wine and may be applied topically as well.
Warning:
Should not be taken liberally in pregnancy.
Notes:
This item is often sold as jī xuè téng (Spatholobi Caulis). However, the two differ in their properties and they are easily distinguished from one another despite widespread mislabeling in the marketplace.
Quality:
Thick stems are the best.
