Source: Chóng Dìng Tōng Sú Shāng Hán Lùn 重订通俗伤寒论

Ingredients:

Action: Enriches yīn and resolves the exterior.

Indication: Contraction of wind-heat in yīn vacuity constitutions with signs such as generalized heat effusion, headache, mild aversion to cold, cough, sore throat, little or no sweating, heart vexation, and thirst. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Rapid.

Category:

Method: Decoct with water.

Warnings: Do not use this formula in the absence of yīn vacuity signs. Solomon's seal is sticky and enriching and should not be used in the presence of phlegm.

Rationale: Cōng bái, Dàn dòu chǐ, and Bò hé course wind-heat. In order to prevent damage to yīn, Yù zhú, a cool, sweet agent that does not clog, is included to enrich yīn and moisten dryness, and to increase the source of sweat. Since yīn vacuity patients often suffer from internal heat, Bái wēi is included to enrich yīn and clear heat. Jié gěng diffuses the lung and relieves cough. Gān cǎo and Dà zǎo help to increase humor. Thus, the formula as a whole promotes sweating without damaging yīn, and nourishes yīn without preventing the resolution of the evil.
