Solomon's Seal Variant Decoction
加减葳蕤汤 〔加減葳蕤湯〕jiā jiǎn wēi ruí tāng

Ingredients:
葳蕤 12g- Dàn dòu chǐ (淡豆豉 Sojae Semen Praeparatum, fermented soybean[1]) 12g
- Bái wēi (白薇 Cynanchi Atrati Radix, black swallowwort) 10g
- Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint) 5g
- Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root]) 5g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 3 pieces
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 2g
- Hóng zǎo (红枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 2 pieces
Action: Enriches yīn and resolves the exterior.
Indication: Contraction of wind-heat in yīn vacuity constitutions with signs such as

Method: Decoct with water.
Warnings: Do not use this formula in the absence of
Rationale: Cōng bái, Dàn dòu chǐ, and Bò hé course wind-heat. In order to prevent damage to yīn, Yù zhú, a cool, sweet agent that does not clog, is included to enrich yīn and moisten dryness, and to increase the source of sweat. Since yīn vacuity patients often suffer from internal heat, Bái wēi is included to enrich yīn and clear heat. Jié gěng diffuses the lung and relieves cough. Gān cǎo and Dà zǎo help to increase humor. Thus, the formula as a whole promotes sweating without damaging yīn, and nourishes yīn without preventing the resolution of the evil.
Variations:
- Pronounced exterior patterns: Add a little Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) and Gé gēn (葛根 Puerariae Radix, pueraria [root]).
Dry throat andcough ing of phlegm that brings no gratification: Add Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]) and Guā lóu pí (瓜蒌皮 Trichosanthis Pericarpium, trichosanthes rind).- Pronounced
vexation and thirst : Add Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root).
