Yīn water

阴水 〔陰水〕yīn shuǐ

From Dān-Xī’s Heart-Approach (丹溪心法 dān xī xīn fǎ). Water swelling attributed to devitalized spleen yáng and debilitated kidneyyáng failing to move and transform water, and characterized by swelling of face and instep,or by swelling of the lower limbs first. The swelling pits under pressure and is associatedwith oppression in the chest, reduced food intake, cold limbs, lassitude of spirit, sloppystool, scant urine, heavy body and aching lumbus, an enlarged tongue with white fur, and asunken slow weak pulse. Yīn water is so named because it includes vacuity and cold patterns.

Medicinal therapy: Fortify the spleen, warm the kidney, free yáng, andtransform dampness. For devitalization of spleen yáng, warm spleen yáng and controlwater-damp. Use Spleen-Firming Beverage (实脾shí pí yǐn). Add ginseng (Ginseng Radix, rén shēn) and astragalus (Astragali Radix,黄芪 huáng qí) for pronounced qì vacuity; add cinnamon twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝 guì zhī) and alisma (Alismatis Rhizoma,泽泻 zé xiè) for scant urine. For debilitation of kidney yáng, treat by warmingkidney and dispersing cold and by moving qì and disinhibiting water with True Warrior Decoct ion (真武zhēn wǔ tāng) combined with Poria Five Powder (五苓散 wǔ língsǎn); add fenugreek (Trigonellae Semen, 胡芦巴 hú lúbā), morinda (Morindae Officinalis Radix, 巴戟天 bā jǐ tiān),and cinnamon bark (Cinnamomi Cortex, 肉桂 ròu guì) for pronounced vacuitycold signs.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, back transport points, SP, andST. Select CV-9 (Water Divide, 水分 shuǐ fēn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì,气海 qì hǎi), BL-22 (Triple Burner Transport, 三焦俞sān jiāo shù), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交sān yīn jiāo), BL-39 (Bend Yáng, 委阳wěi yáng), SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn língquán), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), needlingwith supplementation and adding moxa.
