Transforming phlegm and opening the orifices
化痰开窍 〔化痰開竅〕huà tán kāi qiào
Also sweeping phlegm and opening the orifices; sweeping phlegm and arousing the brain; eliminating phlegm and opening the orifices. To treat clouded spirit in phlegm patterns. Distinction is made between heat phlegm and cold phlegm.
Heat phlegm (热痰rè tán) patterns are characterized by exuberant phlegm with rough breathing, clouded spirit and delirious speech, generalized heat, vexation and agitation, and a red tongue with yellow fur.
Medicinal therapy: Use
Acumoxatherapy: Main points: ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), and GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu). For heat phlegm, add LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī); needle with drainage, and prick Twelve Well Points (

Acumoxatherapy: To the main points given above add add CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén), and CV-8 (Spirit Gate Tower, 神阙 shén què); needle with even supplementation and drainage and moxa (CV-8 can only be moxaed).
