Kidney qì vacuity

肾气虚 〔腎氣虛〕shèn qì xū

Debilitation of original qì in the kidney due to insufficiency of earlier heaven, taxation damage, or enduring illness affecting the kidney, and characterized by limp aching lumbus and knees and devitalized essence-spirit exacerbated by overexertion. Other signs include dizziness, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, fatigue and lack of strenth, deafness, tinnitus, heel pain, loose teeth and hair loss, seminal efflux, premature ejaculation, vaginal discharge, and flooding and spotting. The tongue is pale and enlarged; the pulse is fine and weak, especially at the cubit.

Medicinal therapy: Supplement and boost kidney qì. Use Left-Restoring [Kidney Yīn] Pill (左归丸 zuǒ guī wán). Treatment can be varied according to signs. Where continuous aching pain in the lumbus and knees is the main sign, accompanied by limpness of the legs and knees, exacerbated by exertion and relieved by rest, Left-Restoring [Kidney Yīn] Pill (左归丸 zuǒ guī wán) can be combined with Young Maid Pill (青娥丸 qīng é wán). Where deafness or tinnitus is the main sign, accompanied by dizziness, lack of strength, and aching lumbus, use Deafness Left-Benefiting Loadstone Pill (耳聋左慈丸 ěr lóng zuǒ cí wán). Where dizziness and lassitude of spirit are the main signs, accompanied by aching lumbus and tinnitus, use Left-Restoring [Kidney Yīn] Pill (左归丸 zuǒ guī wán) plus codonopsis (Codonopsis Radix, 党参 dǎng shēn) and astragalus (Astragali Radix, 黄芪 huáng qí).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on BL, KI, GV, CV. Select BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī); needle with supplementation.

Point selection according to signs: For dizziness, add GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), and GB-39 (Suspended Bell, 悬钟 xuán zhōng). For deafness or tinnitus, add TB-17 (Wind Screen, 翳风 yì fēng), GB-2 (Auditory Convergence, 听会 tīng huì), SI-19 (Auditory Palace, 听宫 tīng gōng), and TB-3 (Central Islet, 中渚 zhōng zhǔ). For limp aching lumbus and knees, add GV-3 (Lumbar Yáng Pass, 腰阳关 yāo yáng guān), BL-40 (Bend Center, 委中 wěi zhōng), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), GB-39 (Suspended Bell, 悬钟 xuán zhōng), and BL-60 (Kunlun Mountains, 昆仑 kūn lún). For seminal emission, add KI-12 (Great Manifestation, 大赫 dà hè), and HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén). For heel pain, add PC-7 (Great Mound, 大陵 dà líng), BL-62 (Extending Vessel, 申脉 shēn mài), and BL-60 (Kunlun Mountains, 昆仑 kūn lún). For vaginal discharge, add GB-26 (Girdling Vessel, 带脉 dài mài), BL-30 (White Ring Transport, 白环俞 bái huán shù), BL-32 (Second Bone-Hole, 次髎 cì liáo), and SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo),
