BL-62 Extending Vessel

申脉 〔申脈〕shēn mài

Alternate names: 鬼路 guǐ lù, Ghost Road; 阳跷 yáng qiāo, Yang Springing; 阳蹻 yáng qiáo, Yang Springing

Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the foot, in the depression immediately inferior to the lateral malleolus.

Classic location: In the depression five fēn below the outer anklebone . . . between the two sinews. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The external malleolar arterial network. The sural nerve.

Action: Courses exterior evils; treats wind diseases; stabilizes the spirit-mind; soothes the sinews and vessels.

Modern indications: Headache; dizziness; epilepsy; mania and withdrawal; aching pain in the lumbus and legs; painful red eyes; pain in the lumbus and leg.

Classic indications: Heat effusion and aversion to cold; swelling of the neck and armpit; hemilateral headache and medial headache; heart fright; ringing in the ears; nosebleed; leg qì (jiǎo qì, beriberi); wind stroke hemiplegia and loss of speech; deviated eyes and mouth; female blood and qì pain; difficulty in bending and stretching the knee and foot.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 2‒3 cones; pole 3‒5 min.

Point groups: Confluence point (bā mài jiāo huì xué) of the yáng springing vessel (yáng qiāo mài); one of the thirteen ghost points.
