Fish Poison Yam Dampness-Percolating Decoction

萆薢渗湿汤 〔萆薢滲濕湯〕bì xiè shèn shī tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness.

Indication: Shank sores (lián chuāng) caused by blood stasis due to damp-heat pouring downward, characterized by swelling, and discharge of watery fluid after discharge. As the condition persists without healing, the skin darkens and hardens, and the discharge takes on a foul smell. Tongue fur: Yellow and glossy. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid. Also used to treat cinnabar toxin (erysipelas) of the lower limbs, eczema, foot damp qì, genital erosion, and genital itch.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Bì xiè disinhibits damp turbidity, and also has the function of soothing the sinews and freeing the network vessels. Huáng bǎi clears heat and disinhibits dampness, and also drains fire and resolves toxin. Huá shí, Tōng cǎo, Fú líng, and Zé xiè clear heat and drain water, making the dampness pass out with the urine. Mǔ dān pí clears heat and cools the blood, as well as quickening the and moving stasis. It acts with the Huáng bǎi to clear the blood and resolve toxin, and with the Bì xiè to free the network vessels, and because of this it is an important for treating shank sores. This formula's emphasis is on clearing and disinhibiting damp-heat rather than quickening the blood.
