Action: Separates the turbid from the clear; warms the kidney and disinhibits dampness.
Indication: Turbid urine due to a vacuous kidney qì failing to contain essence characterized frequent painless urination with murky urine, thick in texture and white in color like water rice has been washed in. Can also treat white unctuous vaginal discharge with a slimy white tongue fur attributable to downpour of damp turbidity. Modern research shows that the formula is effective for chyluria, and urinary infection and prostatitis with the same urinary signs in patterns of downpour of damp turbidity.
Category: Dampness-dispelling formulas / Water-damp warming and transforming formula
Rationale: Bì xiè disinhibits dampness, separates the clear from the turbid, and transforms turbidity. Wū yào warms kidney yáng and eliminates cold qì from the bladder so that the natural function of separating the clear and draining the turbid is restored. Shí chāng pú transforms turbidity and frees the orifices. However, since the turbidity is caused by the kidney failing to contain essence, Yì zhì rén is used to supplement the kidney and astringe essence, and to reduce urination. A variant of the formula adds Fú líng and Gān cǎo to enhance the separating of the and turbid.
