Statesman Shǐ's Wine-Steeped Formula

史国公浸酒方 〔史國公浸酒方〕shǐ guó gōng jìn jiǔ fāng

Ingredients:

Action: Nourishes the blood and frees the network vessels; dispels wind and relieves pain.

Indication: Wind-damp impediment (fēng shī bì) patterns arising when wind-damp lodges in the channels and joints in patients suffering from blood vacuity. Signs: joint pain, numbness and tingling of the limbs, inhibited bending and stretching. Tongue: Pale with glossy white fur. Pulse: Fine and stringlike.

Method: Steep tiger bone in wine for one day, then mix-fry with butter. Then steep all the ingredients in wine.

Rationale: Fáng fēng, Qín jiāo, Yuán cán shā, Bì xiè, Qiāng huó, Sōng jié, and Qié gēn dispel wind and overcome dampness, free impediment () and relieve pain. Sōng jié eliminates wind in the joints, while eggplant root frees the channels and quickens the network vessels. Hǔ gǔ strengthens the sinew and bone, tracks down wind and frees pain. Dāng guī and Gǒu qǐ zǐ nourish and quicken the blood, thereby helping the wind-dispelling and sinew-soothing action of the formula. Niú xī combined with Dāng guī quickens the blood and frees the joints. Biē jiǎ with Gǒu qǐ zǐ nourishes the liver yīn and softens the sinew. The liquor frees the vessels, moves qì, and enhances drug action.
