Contraindications of medicinals in pregnancy

妊娠药忌 〔妊娠藥忌〕rèn shēn yào jì

Inappropriateness or inadvisability of taking or prescribing certain medicinals during pregnancy since they may cause miscarriage or harm both the mother and child.

    • 刺猬皮 (cì wèi pí) hedgehog’s pelt (Erinacei Pellis)

    • 龟版 (guī bǎn) tortoise shell (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum)
    • 鳖甲 (biē jiǎ) turtle shell (Trionycis Carapax)

    Some of these medicinals such as arsenic (Arsenicum, 砒石 pī shí), croton (Crotonis Fructus, 巴豆 bā dòu), and mylabris (Mylabris, 斑蝥 bān máo) are absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. Others are permitted when suitably processed, e.g., pinellia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏 bàn xià) prepared with ginger juice, which is often used for malign obstruction in the early stages of pregnancy.
