Yīn jaundice

阴黄 〔陰黃〕yīn huáng

Also yīn yellowing. Jaundice characterized by somber withered-yellow facial complexion, torpid stomach, abdominal distension, lassitude of spirit, lack of strength, dull rib-side pain, short voidings of scant urine, unsolid stool, pale tongue with slimy tongue fur, and a sunken slow fine pulse. When this is the result of cold-damp, it is characterized by reduced food intake, oppression in the stomach duct, or even abdominal distension. When due to spleen vacuity and blood depletion, additional signs include dry skin, heart palpitation, and shortness of breath. When due to accumulation of static blood, there is a painful concretion under the left rib-side, and spider nevi. Yīn jaundice sometimes develops from yáng jaundice.

Medicinal therapy: Cold-damp patterns are treated by warming the center, fortifying the spleen and transforming dampness with formulas such as Virgate Wormwood, Atractylodes, and Aconite Decoction (茵陈朮附汤 yīn chén zhú fù tāng). Spleen vacuity and blood depletion is treated by fortifying the spleen and warming the center and by boosting qì and nourishing the blood, using formulas such as Astragalus Center-Fortifying Decoction (黄芪建中汤 huáng qí jiàn zhōng tāng). Blood stasis accumulation is treated by quickening blood, transforming stasis and abating jaundice with Infradiaphragmatic Stasis-Expelling Decoction (膈下逐瘀汤 gé xià zhú yū tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on ST, SP, and back transport points. Select BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-19 (Gallbladder Transport, 胆俞 dǎn shù), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán); needle with supplementation and add moxa.

Point selection according to signs: For lassitude of spirit and lack of strength, add CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén), and CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi). For abdominal distension, add LR-13 (Camphorwood Gate, 章门 zhāng mén) and SP-4 (Yellow Emperor, 公孙 gōng sūn). For dull pain in the rib-side, add SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo) and CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi). For sloppy diarrhea, add ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), and CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán).
