BL-19 Gallbladder Transport

胆俞 〔膽俞〕 dǎn shù

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the tenth thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: One cùn and five fēn either side of the spine, below the tenth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Medial branches of the posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein. Medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 10th and 11th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches.

Action: Clears gallbladder fire; dispels damp-heat; harmonizes the stomach; loosens the diaphragm; brightens the eyes.

Modern indications: Jaundice; bitter taste in the mouth; rib-side pain; pulmonary consumption (TB); tidal heat effusion.

Classical indications: Dry retching; pain in the throat; inability to get food and drink down; irascibility; headache and shivering; yellowing of the eyes; steaming bone taxation heat effusion; vacuity taxation; semen in the urine; axillary swelling; propping fullness in the chest and rib-side that prevents turning over; shortness of breath.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Point groups: Transport point (shù xué) of the gallbladder.
