Wind malaria

风疟 〔風瘧〕fēng nüè

Malaria attributed to contraction of wind due to excessive consumption of cold foods and beverages. Wind malaria is characterized by mild aversion to cold followed by pronounced heat effusion, headache, heat effusion and agitation.

Medicinal therapy: If there is aversion to wind without sweating, it is treated by coursing wind and resolving the exterior with Apricot Kernel and Perilla Powder (杏苏散 xìng sū sǎn) plus bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡 chái hú). If there is aversion to cold with sweating and heat vexation, it is treated by clearing heat and resolving the flesh with Cinnamon Twig Decoction (桂枝汤 guì zhī tāng) plus scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, SI, PC, GV, and BL. Main points: GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), GV-13 (Kiln Path, 陶道 táo dào), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), and PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ). If there is aversion to wind without sweating, add BL-11 (Great Shuttle, 大杼 dà zhù), BL-12 (Wind Gate, 风门 fēng mén), BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), and BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ); needle with drainage and add moxa. If there is aversion to cold with sweating and heat vexation, add GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ), BL-62 (Extending Vessel, 申脉 shēn mài), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ); needle with drainage. For principles and methods of treatment, see malaria.
