BL-12 Wind Gate

风门 〔風門〕fēng mén

Alternate names: 风府 fēng fǔ, Wind House; 热府 rè fǔ, House of Heat

Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classic location: One cùn and five fēn either side of the spine, below the second vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The medial cutaneous branches of the posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein. Superficially, the medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 2nd and 3rd thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral cutaneous branches.

Action: Dispels wind and diffuses the lung; courses the channels and resolves the exterior.

Modern indications: Wind damage (common cold); cough; heat effusion; headache; stiff nape; chest and back pain.

Classic indications: Wind dizziness and headache; nasal congestion and runny nose; heavy eye (目瞑 mù míng); sneezing; panting and qì ascent; pain in the back and chest; heat in the chest; welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū) on the back; jaundice.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the bladder channel and governing vessel.
