Sudden spasmodic explusion of breath through the nose and mouth with a characteristic hissing sound, as due to irritation of the airways. In illness, it is due to wind-cold and other evils affecting diffusion of lung qì. It is seen in wind-cold fettering the lung, measles, and smallpox.
