When the stomach is in disharmony, there is unquiet sleep
胃不和则卧不安 〔胃不和則臥不安〕wèi bù hé zé wò bù ān
From The Inner Classic (内经 nèi jīng). When the stomach is in disharmony as observed in phlegm-fire harassing the upper body or spleen-stomach vacuity, there may be poor sleep or insomnia.
Medicinal therapy: Harmonize the stomach, transform dampness, and dispel phlegm. Use formulas such as Two Matured Ingredients Stomach-Calming Powder (二陈平胃散èr chén píng wèi sǎn) plus acorus (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 石菖蒲shí chāng pú) and costazia bone/pumice (Costaziae Os/Pumex, 海浮石hǎi fú shí), or plus gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子shān zhī zǐ) and coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连huáng lián). If the stool is hard and bound, use Phlegm-Abducting Decoction (导痰汤dǎo tán tāng); if there is stomach duct pain, use Phlegm-Rolling Pill (滚痰丸gǔn tán wán).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on HT, SP, ST, and CV. Main points: Alert Spirit Quartet (四神聪sì shén cōng), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), and PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān).
Point selection according to cause: For phlegm-heat harassing the upper body, add LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ) and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí); needle with drainage. For spleen-stomach vacuity, add BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù) and BL-21 (Stomach Transport, 胃俞 wèi shù); needle with supplementation.
Point selection according to signs: For hard bound stool, add ST-37 (Upper Great Hollow, 上巨虚 shàng jù xū), SP-14 (Abdominal Bind, 腹结 fù jié), and LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ). For stomach duct pain, add LR-13 (Camphorwood Gate, 章门 zhāng mén), ST-34 (Beam Hill, 梁丘 liáng qiū), and SP-4 (Yellow Emperor, 公孙 gōng sūn).
