Summerheat-damp

暑湿 〔暑濕〕shǔ shī

A disease pattern arising in hot, damp summer weather and characterized by summerheat heat complicated by dampness. It arises when summerheat heat damages liquid and qì and damp turbidity obstructs the qì dynamic and manifests in glomus and oppression in the chest and stomach duct, heart vexation, generalized heat effusion, slimy yellow tongue fur. When summerheat encumbers the center burner, there may be vigorous heat effusion, vexing thirst, copious sweating, scant urine, oppression in the chest, and generalized heaviness. If it spreads through the trip burner, there may be cough, generalized heat effusion, red face, glomus and oppression in the chest and stomach duct, thin sloppy stool, short voidings of reddish urine. Summerheat-damp is characterized by enduring low heat effusion, fatigued and cumbersome limbs, poor appetite, oppression in the chest, and nausea and vomiting. There is frequently sloppy diarrhea with ungratifying defecation, and short voidings of reddish urine. The pulse is soggy and the tongue fur thick and slimy.

Medicinal therapy: Clear summerheat and transform dampness using patchouli (Pogostemonis Herba, 藿香 huò xiāng), eupatorium (Eupatorii Herba, 佩兰 pèi lán), sweet wormwood (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 青蒿 qīng hāo), Six-to-One Powder (六一散 liù yī sǎn), officinal magnolia bark (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 厚朴 hòu pò), atractylodes (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 苍朮 cāng zhú), and poria (Poria, 茯苓 fú líng), which are often combined with coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián) and scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín). Pronounced exterior patterns can be treated with formulas containing mosla (Moslae Herba, 香薷 xiāng rú), which clears summerheat and resolves the exterior. General summerheat-damp patterns can be treated with Sweet Wormwood and Scutellaria Gallbladder-Clearing Decoction (蒿芩清胆汤 hāo qín qīng dǎn tāng) and its variations. Summerheat-heat with pronounced exterior signs can be treated with Six-Ingredient Mosla Beverage (六味香薷饮 liù wèi xiāng rú yǐn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on PC, ST, LI, and SP. Select PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán); needle with drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For enduring low fever, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī). For oppression in the chest, add CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng). For nausea and vomiting, add ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng),
