Action: Clears the gallbladder and discharges heat; harmonizes the stomach and transforms dampness.
Indication: Evil heat depressed in the gallbladder channel and phlegm-damp obstructing the center burner, characterized by mild heat effusion with aversion to cold,
Category: Harmonization formulas / Lesser yáng harmonization formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula is based on Wēn dǎn tāng (温胆汤 Gallbladder-Warming Decoction), which contains Bàn xià, Chén pí, Fú líng, Gān cǎo, Zhú rú, Zhǐ shí, Shēng jiāng and Dà zǎo, and which clears and drains gallbladder heat, as well as drying dampness and transforming phlegm. The present formula adds Qīng hāo and Huáng qín, which also clear and drain gallbladder heat. It also adds Bì yù sǎn (碧玉散 Jasper Jade Powder), which with Chì fú líng abducts damp-heat out with the urine. The formula as a whole thus clears heat and disinhibits the gallbladder, while eliminating phlegm and dampness. When the damp-heat is eliminated the gallbladder and stomach return to harmony. Bì yù sǎn (碧玉散 Jasper Jade Powder)can be replaced with Qīng dài and Huá shí.
