Summerheat tetany

暑痉 〔暑痙〕shǔ jìng

Fright wind due to the contraction of summerheat characterized by generalized heat effusion, headache, stiffness of the nape, and absence of sweating.

Medicinal therapy: Use Newly Supplemented Mosla Beverage (新加香薷饮 xīn jiā xiāng rú yǐn). If there is sweating, Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn) with extra mulberry leaf (Mori Folium, 桑叶 sāng yè) can be used. If there is generalized heaviness and scant sweating, Atractylodes White Tiger Decoction (苍朮白虎汤 cāng zhú bái hǔ tāng) is appropriate. If there is a scallion-stalk pulse, red facial complexion, garrulousness, panting, and thirst, indicating that the verge of desertion has been reached, Pulse-Engendering Variant Powder (加减生脉散 jiā jiǎn shēng mài sǎn) can be used. If there is clouded spirit, Provisioning-Clearing Decoction (清营汤 qīng yíng tāng) plus uncaria (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 钩藤 gōu téng), moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí), and antelope horn (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角 líng yáng jiǎo) should be prescribed.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on PC, LI, ST, GV, GB, and BL. Select PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), GV-8 (Sinew Contraction, 筋缩 jīn suō), BL-57 (Mountain Support, 承山 chéng shān), and BL-60 (Kunlun Mountains, 昆仑 kūn lún); needle with drainage to clear summerheat and resolve tetany. For high fever, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí). Prick Ten Diffusing Points (十宣 shí xuān) to bleed.
