Lycium and Goat's Kidney Gruel
枸杞羊肾粥 〔枸杞羊腎粥〕 gǒu qǐ yáng shèn zhōu

Ingredients
- Gǒu qǐ yè (枸杞叶 Lycii Folium, lycium leaf) 500g
- Yáng shèn (羊肾 Caprae seu Ovis Renes, goat’s [or sheep’s] kidney) 1 piece
- Yáng ròu (羊肉 Caprae seu Ovis Caro, goat [or sheep] meat) 60g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 2 stalks
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) 1 pinch
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60–90g
Actions: Boosts kidney yīn; supplements kidney qì; invigorates original yáng.
Indications: Kidney vacuity and taxation detriment with debilitation of yáng qì. Signs include lumbar pain, limp wilting legs, dizzy head and ringing in the brain, hardness of hearing or deafness, impotence, frequent urination or enuresis.
Rationale: The tender leaf of the lycium, popularly used as vegetable, are cool, bitter and sweet. It enters the heart, lung, spleen and kidney channels, and its supplements vacuity and boosts essence, clear heats, allays thirst, dispel swind and brightens the eyes. It is used medicinally to treat heat effusion due to vacuity taxation, vexation and thirst, painful red eyes, cloudy vision, eye screens, night blindness, flooding and spotting, vaginal discharge, swollen heat-toxin sores. It can be made as a gruel with rice without other ingredients. Goat's or lamb's kidney is warm and sweet. It supplements kidney qì, warms kidney yáng, and replenishes essence. It is effective form cold lumbar pain, weak legs and knees, deafness and ringing in the brain, impotence, enuresis, and frequent urination. Goat's meat or lamb supplements vacuity taxation, dispels cold, warms and supplement both qì and blood, and improves the appetite, and is therefore effective in treating lumbar pain, impotence, and emaciation.
