Antelope Horn and Uncaria Decoction
羚角钩藤汤 〔羚角鉤藤湯〕líng jiǎo gōu téng tāng

Ingredients:
- Líng yáng jiǎo (羚羊角 Saigae Tataricae Cornu, antelope horn) (grated to a powder) 0.3–0.6g
- Gōu téng (钩藤 Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, uncaria [stem and thorn]) (add at end) 9–15g
- Chú jú huā (滁菊花 Chrysanthemi Flos Chuzhouensis%#%, Chuzhou chrysanthemum [flower]) 9–15g
- Shuāng sāng yè (霜桑叶 Mori Folium Praeustum, frostbitten mulberry leaf) 9–12g
- Xiān dì huáng (鲜生地 Rehmanniae Radix Recens, fresh rehmannia [root]) 15–30g
- Shēng bái sháo (生白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba Cruda, raw white peony [root]) 9–12g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
- Chuān bèi mǔ (川贝母 Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, Sìchuān fritillaria [bulb]) 6–9g
- Zhú rú (竹茹 Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, bamboo shavings) 6–12g
- Fú shén (茯神 Poria cum Pini Radice , root poria) 9–12g
Action: Clears the liver and extinguishes wind; calms and downbears liver yáng.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Líng yáng jiǎo and Gōu téng are the sovereign agents because they clear heat and cool the liver, as well as extinguishing wind and relieving tetany. Sāng yè and Jú huā help the sovereign agents to course the wind-heat in the liver channel. The formula also includes agents to address damage to yīn and phlegm that arises through scorching of liquid by exuberant heat: Bái sháo, Gān cǎo, and Shēng dì huáng nourish yīn and increase humor; Chuān bèi mǔ and Zhú rú clear and transform heat phlegm; and Fú shén quiets the heart and spirit harassed by phlegm.
Variations:
- Pronounced heat: Add agents like Bǎn lán gēn (板蓝根 Isatidis Radix, isatis root) and Dà qīng yè (大青叶 Isatidis Folium, isatis leaf).
- Internal heat block with
clouded spirit : Addniuhuangwan orzhibaodan .
