Ingredients:

• Gōu téng (钩藤 Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, uncaria [stem and thorn]) 12g
• Líng yáng jiǎo (羚羊角 Saigae Tataricae Cornu, antelope horn) (predecocted) 6g
• Quán xiē (全蝎 Scorpio , scorpion) (with toxin removed) 3g
• Tài zǐ shēn (太子参 Pseudostellariae Radix, pseudostellaria [root]) 6g
• Tiān má (天麻 Gastrodiae Rhizoma, gastrodia [root]) 6g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 3g

Action: Clears heat, extinguishes wind, and stabilizes fright; supports right qì and expels the evil.

Indication: Acute child fright wind due to extreme heat engendering wind with clenched jaw, convulsions of the limbs, vigorous heat effusion, fright palpitation, and forward staring eyes. Tongue: Red or crimson. Pulse: Rapid. Can also treat epilepsy of pregnancy (i.e., eclampsia) characterized by convulsions, clenched jaw, fixation of the eyes, red tongue with scant fur, and a stringlike pulse due to ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng.

Rationale: Gōu téng not only clears heat and calms the liver, but also extinguishes wind and checks tetany. However, it is of limited effect for acute fright wind with high fever and convulsions. For this reason, Líng yáng jiǎo, which has a stronger heat-clearing and wind-extinguishing effect is used with it. Tiān má and Quán xiē also extinguish wind and resolve tetany. Since sudden vacuity-repletion mutations are common in young children and liver-cooling, wind-extinguishing agents tend to damage qì and the liquid, Tài zǐ shēn and Gān cǎo are added as a safeguard.
