Sparganium Decoction
三棱汤 〔三稜湯〕 sān léng tāng

Ingredients
- Sān léng (三棱 Sparganii Rhizoma, sparganium [root]) 15g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 9g
- É zhú (莪朮 Curcumae Rhizoma, curcuma rhizome) 9g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 6g
- Dà fù pí (大腹皮 Arecae Pericarpium, areca husk) 2g
Actions: Moves qì and breaks blood; transforms stasis and disperses concretions.
Indications: Concretions, conglomerations, accumulations, or gatherings characterized by hardness, fullness, glomus, difficult ingestion, and painful abdominal distension.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula treats
Variations:
- Hepatosplenomegaly or cirrhosis of the liver: Add Biē jiǎ (鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax, turtle shell) and Jī nèi jīn (鸡内金 Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Corneum, gizzard lining).
- Severe pain: Add Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]) and Yán hú suǒ (延胡索 Corydalis Rhizoma, corydalis [rhizome]).
