Golden Three Decoction

三金汤 〔三金湯〕 sān jīn tāng

Source: Empirical formula

Ingredients

Actions: Disinhibits urine and expels stones.

Indications: Urinary calculus characterized by pain on urination, bloody urine, and attended by nausea, vomiting and retching, or heat effusion. Tongue fur: Yellow or white. Pulse: Rapid, and either slippery or stringlike.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: The sovereign agents are Jīn qián cǎo, Hǎi jīn shā, and Jī nèi jīn, golden three, which disperse calculi. These are supported by Lú gēn, Qú mài, and mallow seed, which clear heat and disinhibit dampness. They disinhibit urine and free strangury, and expel urinary calculi. Note that the golden three combined with liver-coursing and qì-rectifying agents such as Yù jīn, zhike, and Mù xiāng can be used to treat bile duct calculi.

Notes: This formula is called GoldenTthree because the Chinese names for three of the agents, moneywort, chicken's gizzard lining, and lygodium spore contain the character 金 (jīn), metal or gold.
