Cold stroke

寒中 〔寒中〕hán zhòng

1. A form of wind-like stroke that arises when cold evil invades the channels, and that is characterized by rigid body, clenched jaw preventing speech, shaking of the limbs, sudden dizziness, and absence of sweating.

Medicinal therapy: Warm the interior and disperse cold using Ginger and Aconite Decoction (姜附汤 jiāng fù tāng) or Aconite Center-Rectifying Decoction (附子理中汤 fù zǐ lǐ zhōng tāng). In severe cases, Storax Pill (苏合香丸 sū hé xiāng wán) may be given first to open the block.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV and CV. Apply moxa at GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), CV-8 (Spirit Gate Tower, 神阙 shén què), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), and ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), until the limbs become warm, the pulse rises, and the patient’s spirit-mind becomes clear.

2. Also called cold strike. Evil in the spleen and stomach with interior cold signs. It is usually due to spleen-stomach vacuity cold with evils transforming with cold, or develops from taxation fatigue and internal damage. Signs include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rumbling intestines.

Medicinal therapy: Warm the center and disperse cold with Aquilaria Stomach-Warming Pill (沉香温胃丸 chén xiāng wēn wèi wán).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, SP, ST, and LI. Select CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), SP-4 (Yellow Emperor, 公孙 gōng sūn), and LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ); needle with drainage and large amounts of moxa.
