Throat impediment (sore throat with difficulty swallowing) attributable to yīn vacuity. When due to liver-kidney yīn vacuity, signs include tinnitus, night sweating, and limp aching lumbus and knees. When due to damage to the lung-stomach yīn by dryness, it is characterized by dry throat, dry lips, and cough without phlegm.

Biomedical correspondence: chronic pharyngitis.

Medicinal therapy: Liver kidney-yīn vacuity is treated by enriching yīn and downbearing fire with formulas such as Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill (知柏地黄丸 zhī bǎi dì huáng wán). Damage to lung-stomach yīn is treated by moistening the lung and nourishing yīn with formulas such as Yīn-Nourishing Lung-Clearing Decoction (养阴清肺汤 yǎng yīn qīng fèi tāng) and Dryness-Clearing Lung-Rescuing Decoction (清燥救肺汤 qīng zào jiù fèi tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: For liver-kidney yīn vacuity, base treatment mainly on KI and LU. Needle with supplementation at BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), and with drainage at LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán), and TB-1 (Passage Hub, 关冲 guān chōng). For damage to lung-stomach yīn, base treatment mainly on back transport points, LU, ST, and KI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù), BL-21 (Stomach Transport, 胃俞 wèi shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and ST-44 (Inner Court, 内庭 nèi tíng).

Point selection according to signs: For dry pharynx, add TB-2 (Humor Gate, 液门 yè mén). For pronounced soreness, prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed.
