风热感冒 〔風熱感冒〕fēng rè gǎn mào

A common cold due to contraction of wind-heat. Wind-heat common cold is characterized by heat effusion, headache, slight aversion to cold, spontaneous sweating, nasal congestion without snivel (nasal mucus), scorching sore throat, cough with thick yellow phlegm, thirst, red tongue with thin slightly yellowish-white tongue fur, and a rapid floating pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Cool acrid exterior resolution. Use formulas such as Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn). For nasal congestion without snivel, add xanthium (Xanthii Fructus, 苍耳子 cāng ěr zǐ), Dahurian angelica (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 白芷 bái zhǐ), mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷 bò hé), and houttuynia (Houttuyniae Herba, 鱼腥草 yú xīng cǎo). For scorching sore throat, add belamcanda (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 射干 shè gān), isatis root (Isatidis Radix, 板蓝根 bǎn lán gēn), and scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn). For cough with thick yellow phlegm, add fritillaria (Fritillariae Bulbus, 贝母 bèi mǔ), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), apricot kernel (Armeniacae Semen, 杏仁 xìng rén), and peucedanum (Peucedani Radix, 前胡 qián hú). For thirst, add trichosanthes root (Trichosanthis Radix, 天花粉 tiān huā fěn) and adenophora/glehnia (Adenophorae seu Glehniae Radix, 沙参 shā shēn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, LI, and TB. Main points: LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), ST-44 (Inner Court, 内庭 nèi tíng), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), and TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān). For headache, add GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), Greater yáng (tài yáng) (太阳 tài yáng), and SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī). For spontaneous sweating, add LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ) and KI-7 (Recover Flow, 复溜 fù liū). For nasal congestion without snivel, add LI-20 (Welcome Fragrance, 迎香 yíng xiāng) and Hall of Impression (印堂 yìn táng). For scorching sore throat, prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed. For cough with thick yellow phlegm, add BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù) LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē). Needle with drainage at all points.
