Wind water

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, shuǐ rè xué lùn). External wind contraction with water swelling. Signs include rapid onset, floating pulse, pain in the joints, heat effusion and aversion to cold, and swelling, particularly of the head and face (the upper part of the body being affected by wind evil). The disease is the result of impairment of lung qì’s depurative downbearing by wind evil in patients suffering from spleen-kidney qì vacuity.

Medicinal therapy: Course wind, diffuse the lung, and disinhibit water using Spleen-Effusing Decoction (越婢汤 yuè bì tāng), Poria Five Powder (五苓散 wǔ líng sǎn), or Fangji and Astragalus Decoction (防己黄芪汤 fáng jǐ huáng qí tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, back transport points, SP, ST, and GB. Select CV-9 (Water Divide, 水分 shuǐ fēn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), BL-22 (Triple Burner Transport, 三焦俞 sān jiāo shù), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-11 (Great Shuttle, 大杼 dà zhù), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán); needle with drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For high fever, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and prick Ten Diffusing Points (十宣 shí xuān) to bleed. For swelling of the head and face, add GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu) and GV-21 (Before the Vertex, 前顶 qián dǐng). For headache and dizziness, add GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí) and Greater yáng (tài yáng) (太阳 tài yáng).
