Wind tetany
风痉 〔風痙〕 fēng jìng
1. Tetany (jìng) attributed to wind-cold-damp and characterized by repeated occurrence of signs similar to those of epilepsy such as sudden collapse, rigidity of the back, and clenched jaw.
Medicinal therapy: Dispel wind, disperse cold, and transform dampness with formulas such as
Acumoxatherapy: Needle with drainage at GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān), and GV-16 (Wind House, 风府 fēng fǔ) to dispel wind; needle with supplementation and moxa at BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), and GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén) to warm cold; and needle with even supplementation and drainage and apply moxa at ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán), and SP-5 (Shang Hill, 商丘 shāng qiū) to disinhibit dampness.
Point selection according to signs: For cold of the body and back, add GV-12 (Body Pillar, 身柱 shēn zhù) and SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī). For clenched jaw, add ST-7 (Below the Joint, 下关 xià guān), ST-6 (Cheek Carriage, 颊车 jiá chē), and LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ).
