Action: Dispels wind and disperses cold; boosts qì and harmonizes the blood.
Indication: Direct strike by external wind, causing sudden collapse, hypertonicity of the limbs, difficulty in turning sides
Category: Wind-relieving formulas / External wind formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Má huáng, Fáng fēng, Chuān xiōng, and Xìng rén open the block and drain the exterior, and warm and free the channels and network vessels. Guì zhī, Bái sháo, Shēng jiāng and Gān cǎo help to warm the channels and expel the evil and regulate provisioning and defense helping to prevent repeated invasion. Rén shēn —or Dǎng shēn— and Fù zǐ boost qì and yáng, and with Bái sháo and Chuān xiōng, which harmonize qì and blood, help right qì in its fight against the evil. Fáng jǐ and Huáng qín are bitter and cold and eliminate heat (the tip), Fáng jǐ also being able to dispel wind. Ròu guì warms the kidney and assists yáng. However, it is often replaced with Guì zhī, which dispels wind and resolves the exterior.
