From On Cold Damage (伤寒论 shāng hán lùn, biàn tài yáng bìng mài zhèng bìng zhì), which states, Wind-damage with heat effusion failing to resolve in six or seven days, with heart vexation and exterior signs, thirst and drinking of water with immediate vomiting of water ingested is called water counterflow. Later physicians referred to any vomiting of clear water or thirst and drinking of water with immediate vomiting of ingested water as water counterflow. Counterflow water is attributed to the presence of deep-lying rheum.
Medicinal therapy: Free yáng and disinhibit water with Poria Five Powder (五苓散wǔ líng sǎn). If there is qì vacuity, use Six Gentlemen Decoction (六君子汤liù jūn zǐ tāng) plus oven earth (Terra Flava Usta, 伏龙肝fú lóng gān).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on BL, TB, CV, ST, and SP. Select BL-11 (Great Shuttle, 大杼 dà zhù), BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), TB-3 (Central Islet, 中渚 zhōng zhǔ), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), CV-9 (Water Divide, 水分 shuǐ fēn), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán); needle with even supplementation and drainage or with drainage, and add moxa. For qì vacuity, supplement BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), and BL-21 (Stomach Transport, 胃俞 wèi shù).
