Warming and transforming water-damp
温化水湿 〔溫化水濕〕 wēn huà shuǐ shī
A method of treating phlegm-rheum, water swelling, impediment (bì) patterns and cold-damp leg qì arising when vacuous yáng fails to transform water and dampness forms with cold. Warming and transforming water-damp uses hot acrid medicinals that warm and free yáng qì, such as cinnamon twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝 guì zhī) and aconite (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, 附子 fù zǐ), combined with an appropriate amount of dampness-disinhibiting medicinals such as poria (Poria, 茯苓 fú líng) and white atractylodes (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白朮 bái zhú) to eliminate water-damp.
Representative formulas include
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV and back transport points. Select CV-9 (Water Divide, 水分 shuǐ fēn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and BL-39 (Bend Yáng, 委阳 wěi yáng); needle with drainage and add moxa. Compare warming yáng and disinhibiting dampness.
