Source: Shāng Hán Lùn 伤寒论

Ingredients:

• Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 12g
• Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 9g
• Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g

Action: Fortifies the spleen and percolates dampness; warms and transforms phlegm-rheum.

Indication: Phlegm-rheum diseases with fullness and oppression in the chest and rib-side, dizziness and heart palpitation, and sometimes shortness of breath and cough. Tongue fur: White and slimy. Also treats yáng vacuity water swelling.

Category: Dampness-dispelling formulas / Water-damp warming and transforming formula

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Fú líng, the sovereign agent, fortifies the spleen and percolates dampness Guì zhī, the minister agent, frees yáng and promotes qì transformation. Bái zhú, the assistant, fortifies the spleen and dries dampness. Gān cǎo, the courier, supplements the spleen and harmonizes the center.

Variations:

• Copious phlegm, and nausea and vomiting: Add Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) and Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel).
• Chronic gastroenteritis: Add Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]), Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]), and Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]):
• Auditory vertigo: Add Zé xiè (泽泻 Alismatis Rhizoma, alisma [tuber]) and Gōu téng (钩藤 Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, uncaria [stem and thorn]).
• Chronic heart failure: Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]), Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]), and Hóng shēn (红参 Ginseng Radix Rubra, red ginseng).
