Spleen vacuity abdominal distension

脾虚腹胀 〔脾虛腹脹〕 pí xū fù zhàng

Abdominal distension arising when, owing to habitual spleen qì vacuity, and splenic movement and transformation failure, food and drink have difficulty in transforming and accumulate in the stomach and intestines.

Medicinal therapy: Base treatment primarily on fortifying the spleen and dispersing food. If spleen qì is unreplete, use Ginseng, Poria, and White Atractylodes Powder (参苓白朮散 shēn líng bái zhú sǎn); if speech is faint, use Four Gentlemen Decoction (四君子汤 sì jūn zǐ tāng); if there is periodic fullness in the region of the heart and abdomen and difficulty in digesting food and drink, use Unripe Bitter Orange and White Atractylodes Variant Decoction (加减枳朮汤 jiā jiǎn zhǐ zhú tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on the back transport points, CV, SP, ST, and PC. Select BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), LR-13 (Camphorwood Gate, 章门 zhāng mén), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ); needle with supplementation and add moxa. Five Pillar Points (五柱穴 wǔ zhù xué), can be moxaed. See abdominal distension.
