Spleen vacuity

脾虚 〔脾虛〕pí xū

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, zàng qì fǎ shí lùn).

1. Any disease pattern of spleen yīn or spleen yáng vacuity or of qì-blood insufficiency, usually arising from dietary imbalance, inappropriate temperatures, thought and anxiety, taxation fatigue (overwork etc.), or damage to the spleen through enduring sickness. Signs include emaciation with yellow face, lack of strength in the limbs, reduced food intake, nontransformation of grain and water, abdominal pain, rumbling intestines, sloppy stool or diarrhea, puffy swelling, bloody stool, or flooding and spotting.

Medicinal therapy: The principal method of treatment is that of fortifying the spleen. Use formulas like Ginseng, Poria, and White Atractylodes Powder (参苓白朮散 shēn líng bái zhú sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on the back transport points, CV, SP, and ST. Main points: BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-21 (Stomach Transport, 胃俞 wèi shù), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ); needle with supplementation and add moxa.

For selecting points according to signs, see the following entries.

2. Spleen qì vacuity.
