Qì vacuity headache

气虚头痛 〔氣虛頭痛〕 qì xū tóu tòng

Headache attributed to insufficiency of the stomach and spleen and to qì vacuity preventing the upbearing of clear yáng. Qì vacuity headache is exacerbated by taxation and is accompanied by tinnitus, inhibition of the nine orifices, lassitude of spirit, inability to taste food, and a pulse that is either weak or large and forceless.

Medicinal therapy: Fortify the spleen and boost qì using formulas such as Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction (补中益气汤 bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng), or Four Gentlemen Decoction (四君子汤 sì jūn zǐ tāng) plus astragalus (Astragali Radix, 黄芪 huáng qí) and vitex (Viticis Fructus, 蔓荆子 màn jīng zǐ).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV and ST. Select GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái), and needle with supplementation and add moxa. For selection of points according to affected area, see headache. For tinnitus, add TB-21 (Ear Gate, 耳门 ěr mén).
