TB-21 Ear Gate

耳门 〔耳門〕 ěr mén

Channel: TB, hand lesser yáng (shào yáng) triple burner channel

Modern location: An acupoint located immediately anterior to the ear, at a level slightly superior to the tragus.

Classical location: Around the ear from Angle Vertex (TB-20), in the depression in front of the ear at the [intertragic] notch. From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The superficial temporal artery and vein. The branches of the auriculotemporal and facial nerves.

Action: Courses the channels and quickens the network vessels; opens the orifices and boosts the hearing.

Modern indications: Deafness; tinnitus; purulent ear; toothache.

Classical indications: Upper tooth decay; ringing in the ears like the sound of cicadas; submandibular swelling.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.
