Qì stagnation abdominal pain

气滞腹痛 〔氣滯腹痛〕qì zhì fù tòng

Also qì bind abdominal pain. Abdominal pain attributed to qì stagnation arising when constrained affect-mind or careless living depress qì dynamic. Qì stagnation abdominal pain is distending pain or attacks of pain of unfixed location, with oppression in the chest, and rib-side pain. Pain may be relieved by belching or passing of flatus, and exacerbated by emotional imbalance.

Medicinal therapy: Course the liver and resolve depression; rectify qì and relieve pain. If depressed qì transforms into fire, it is also necessary to clear fire. Formulas include Aucklandia Qì-Normalizing Decoction (木香顺气汤 mù xiāng shùn qì tāng) or Counterflow Cold Powder (四逆散 sì nì sǎn) and Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Beverage (柴胡清肝饮 chái hú qīng gān yǐn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LR, PC, and SP. Select CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái), LR-14 (Cycle Gate, 期门 qī mén), and ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū); needle with drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For depressed qì transforming into fire, add PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), and LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān), needling with drainage.
