Postpartum summerheat stroke

产后中暑 〔產後中暑〕 chǎn hòu zhòng shǔ

Contraction of summerheat occurring 1–3 days after delivery, when qì and blood have not recovered and summerheat evil exploits the vacuity to enter the flesh, causing sudden expiration of yīn qì and congestion of the yáng qì that obstructs the channels. Signs include high fever and unclear spirit-mind.

Medicinal therapy: If there is dizziness and nausea, oppression in the chest, flusteredness, thirst, and great sweating, this is a portent of summerheat stroke, for which Summerheat-Clearing Qì-Boosting Decoction (清暑益气汤 qīng shǔ yì qì tāng) can be prescribed. When heat strikes the interior, there is vexation, thirst, great sweating, red facial complexion, and a large surging pulse; treatment takes the form of engendering liquid and allaying thirst with formulas such as White Tiger Decoction Plus Ginseng (白虎加人参汤 bái hǔ jiā rén shēn tāng). When there is intense stomach heat damaging liquid characterized by vexation and thirst, fecal stoppage, macules, treat by flushing stomach heat with formulas such as Jade Spring Powder (玉泉散 yù quán sǎn). If heat toxin enters provisioning and scorches visceral yīn, causing delirious speech, unclear spirit-mind, and convulsions of the limbs, somber-white complexion, and a fine weak pulse, treat by clearing heat and nourishing yīn with variations of Provisioning-Clearing Decoction (清营汤 qīng yíng tāng) and Pulse-Engendering Powder (生脉散 shēng mài sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on PC, LI, ST, HT, KI, and SP. Main points: BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí); needle with drainage.
