Menstrual heat effusion

经行发热 〔經行發熱〕jīng xíng fā rè

Heat effusion during menstruation; attributed to provisioning-defense disharmony resulting from contraction of external evils, blood heat, or yīn vacuity.

Patterns

Contraction of cold evil (感受寒邪 gǎn 受hán xié) patterns are characterized by heat effusion, aversion to cold, and absence of sweating.

Medicinal therapy: Effuse the exterior and disperse cold with Four Agents Decoction (四物汤 sì wù tāng) plus ephedra (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄 má huáng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on BL, GV, SP, and LR. Select LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), BL-11 (Great Shuttle, 大杼 dà zhù), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ); needle with drainage and moxa can be added.

Contraction of wind evil (感受风邪 gǎn shòu fēng xié) patterns are marked by heat effusion, aversion to cold, and spontaneous sweating.

Medicinal therapy: Harmonize provisioning and defense with Four Agents Decoction (四物汤 sì wù tāng) plus cinnamon twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝 guì zhī).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GB, BL, SI, GV, SP, and LR. Select LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ), and SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī); needle with even supplementation and drainage.

Blood heat (血热 xuè rè) patterns are characterized by heat effusion without aversion to cold, and scorching hot flesh.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat and cool the blood with Lycium Root Bark Beverage (地骨皮饮 dì gǔ pí yǐn) plus picrorhiza (Picrorhizae Rhizoma, 胡黄连 hú huáng lián).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on the three yīn channels of the foot. Select SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), and LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān); needle with drainage.

Yin vacuity (阴虚 yīn xū) patterns are marked by postmeridian tidal heat, night sweating, and heat in the hearts of the palms and soles.

Medicinal therapy: Nourish yīn and clear heat with dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng), Chinese angelica (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归 dāng guī), white peony (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍药 bái sháo yào), chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎 chuān xiōng), astragalus (Astragali Radix, 黄芪 huáng qí), and lycium root bark (Lycii Cortex, 地骨皮 dì gǔ pí).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on the three yīn channels of the foot. Select LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and HT-8 (Lesser Mansion, 少府 shào fǔ); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
