A severe form of gān of the lung, characterized by bright-white complexion, steaming bone tidal heat, postmeridian reddening of both cheeks caused by spleen-lung vacuity, lassitude of essence-spirit, periodic dry cough and throat diseases, and night sweating. Traditionally, conditions of this nature were considered as consumption in patients over fifteen years of age and gān in patients under fifteen years of age.

Biomedical correspondence: pulmonary tuberculosis.

Medicinal therapy: Chinese medicine treats gān consumption by boosting qì and fostering yīn, and by supplementing the lung and nourishing the spleen. Representative formulas include Adenophora/Glehnia and Ophiopogon Decoction (沙参麦冬汤 shā shēn mài dōng tāng) or Turtle Shell Powder (鳖甲散 biē jiǎ sǎn), which can be varied according to need.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, SP, ST, KI, and back transport points. Select LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān), BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù), CV-10 (Lower Stomach Duct, 下脘 xià wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-5 (Shang Hill, 商丘 shāng qiū), Four Creases (四缝 sì fèng), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī); needle with supplementation.

Point selection according to signs: For steaming bone tidal heat, add KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), and LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì). For cough and sore pharynx, add LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), and prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed. For night sweating, add HT-6 (Yīn Cleft, 阴郄 yīn xī)
