Ingredients

• Shā shēn (沙参 Adenophorae seu Glehniae Radix, adenophora/glehnia [root]) 9g
• Yù zhú (玉竹 Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, Solomon’s seal [root]) 6g
• Shēng gān cǎo (生甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, raw licorice [root]) 3g
• Shuāng sāng yè (霜桑叶 Mori Folium Praeustum, frostbitten mulberry leaf) 4.5g
• Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 9g
• Shēng biǎn dòu (生扁豆 Lablab Semen Crudum, raw lablab [bean]) 15g
• Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 4.5g

Actions: Clears and nourishes the lung and stomach; engenders liquid and moistens dryness.

Indications: Damage to lung and stomach yīn with dry mouth and throat, dry tongue with scant fur, and a pulse that is fine and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Shā shēn, Mài dōng, Yù zhú, and Tiān huā fěn are all sweet and slightly cold and are moist in substance. They nourish the yīn liquid of the lung and stomach, and clear lung-stomach heat. Sāng yè is light and clear; it diffuses the lung and relieves cough. Combined liquid-nourishing agents, it restores normal diffusion and depurative downbearing of lung qì. Bái biǎn dòu is sweet and balanced, and combined with Gān cǎo, it harmonizes and nourishes stomach qì, helping the spleen and stomach bear fluid upward to the lung.

Variations: For enduring Cough due to enduring heat, add digupi 9g.
