A febrile disease occurring in the summer or autumn that is attributed to damp-heat and characterized by persistent heat effusion, heavy-headedness, generalized pain, glomus and oppression in the chest and stomach duct, white or yellow slimy tongue fur, and a soggy pulse.
Medicinal therapy: If dampness is prevalent, focus treatment on transforming dampness with formulas like Patchouli, Officinal Magnolia Bark, Pinellia, and Poria Decoction (藿朴夏苓汤huò pò xià líng tāng) or Three Kernels Decoction (三仁汤sān rén tāng). If heat is prevalent, focus on clearing heat with formulas such as Coptis and Officinal Magnolia Bark Beverage (连朴饮lián pò yǐn) or Sweet Dew Toxin-Dispersing Elixir (甘露消毒丹gān lù xiāo dú dān). If the condition advances, the evil can enter provisioning and the blood, causing tetanic reversal or bloody stool.
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LI, ST, SP, and CV. Select LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán), CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), and CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn). For predominance of heat, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī). For heat entering the provisioning-blood, add GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu) and PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng) and prick Twelve Well Points (十二井穴shí èr jǐng xué) to bleed.
