Cistanche and Goat's Meat Gruel

苁蓉羊肉粥 〔蓯蓉羊肉粥〕 cōng róng yáng ròu zhōu

Ingredients

Actions: Supplements the kidney and assists yáng; fortifies the spleen and nourishes the stomach; moistens the intestines and frees the stool.

Indications: Impotence, premature ejaculation, infertility, cold lumbar and knee pain, frequent urination, profuse urination at night, and enuresis due to kidney yáng vacuity; general weakness and emaciation, taxation and internal damage, aversion to cold, lack of warmth in the limbs, spleen-stomach vacuity cold, dull pain in the stomach duct and abdomen; yáng vacuity constipation in the elderly.

Method: Wash and chop cistanche and meat. Decoct and strain cistanche, and boil the meat and rice to a then gruel. Add the salt, ginger, and onion just before the end.

Rationale: Ròu cōng róng is sweet, salty, warm, and non-toxic. It enters the kidney and large intestine channels. It boosts the kidney and invigorates yáng, warming and supplementing the lower origin. It is generally used in medicinal formulas to great impotence, premature ejaculation, seminal emission, and enuresis. Goat's meat (or lamb) is warm and sweet. It enters the spleen and kidney channels. It boosts qì and supplements vacuity, warms the center and lower body. It treats vacuity taxation and marked emaciation, limp aching lumbus and knees, and cold mounting (hán shàn). It thus provides a tasty complement to the Ròu cōng róng. The flavor and warming action of these ingredients is further enhanced by the ginger and Cōng bái.
