葱豉汤 〔蔥豉湯〕cōng chǐ tāng
Source: Zhǒu Hòu Fāng 肘后方
Ingredients:
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 9–12g
- Dòu chǐ (豆豉 Sojae Semen Fermentatum, fermented soybean[2]) 12–30g
Action: Promotes sweating and resolves the exterior.
Indication: Mild contraction of wind-cold. Signs: Mild heat effusion with aversion to cold, headache, nasal congestion, and runny nose. Tongue fur: Thin and white. Pulse: Floating.
Category:
Method: Remove the roots and dark green part of the scallions. Decoct all the ingredients together in water.
Rationale: Cōng bái is warm and acrid. It frees yáng and effuses sweat, thereby disperses wind-cold in the fleshy exterior. Dàn dòu chǐ is a dispersing exterior-resolving agent that outthrusts exterior evils. This combination is warm and acrid without being dry, and effuses and disperses without being harsh. It poses no danger of damaging liquid through profuse sweating, and so it is suitable for mild cases of externally contracted wind-cold. When aversion to cold, heat effusion, absence of sweating, headache, and joint pain are more severe, Qiāng huó, perilla, Jīng jiè suì and Fáng fēng can be added.
Variations:
